Henry A. Cornwall to Andrew Cornwall, 1 March 1863
Army of the Potomac
Camp of Buckingham Legion
Near Stafford Court-house Va.
March 1st 1863.
Dear Father
To day is a stormy sunday nothing unusual in camp and as we have nothing to do of course, so I thought I would write you a few lines. I was out on picket when John's dispatch came and never came into camp untill just as he was leaving and Lieut. Cadwell went before I was awake in the morning so I did not send a letter by either of them. To day is quite an important one in the history of our company. / Lieut Oliver R Post of Co. C. is henceforth to be our Captain and a first-rate one he will make. I think nearly all of the boys like him and he is a good officer. A first Lieut cannot be made Capt in his own company that I suppose is the reason Lieut now Capt. Post was promoted Capt. of our Company. I think Lieut Cadwell will recieve command of some other company in the Regt. Our Capt. is one of editors of the Connecticut press which is printed in Hartford. He is a firstrate writer and contributed now and then a piece to that paper I wish you could take it you would / often see a piece there about the 20th C.V. He is a Republican and a union man and he would vote for Buckingham and union. I suppose you will see the Address to the people of Conn. from the C.V. in some of the papers by this time. The address was read to us on dress parade the other night and heartily approved of by every man in the Regiment. I want you should vote for Buckingham and union and make every one vote for him that you can get. If Mike and Richard vote for any one else kick them off the hill with the injunction not to show themselves there again / Get all the votes you can for Buckingham and union. Be sure that all of the Cornwalls vote for him. Dont leave out one vote that can possibly be got. Make every effort and have him elected. I had rather serve in the army ten years than have Tom Seymour or Bill Eaton sit in the Gov chair were they to make their appearance among the C.V's. they would get treated the same as Jeff Davis or any of those arch traitors would. But my sheet is full and I must close. Write soon and let me know how matters and things look in Portland and all the news in general.
Your aff. son Henry
