Henry A. Cornwall to Andrew Cornwall and Elizabeth Cornwall, 21 October 1863
Camp 20th Conn. Vols.
Cowan Station Tenn.
Oct 21st /63
Dear Parients
I have written you twice since I came out here but I dont know whether you have recieved any letters or not. We have not had any mail but once then I got my shirt and the letter you sent with it. I wrote you when we were at Bridgeport Ala. and when we were at Decher Tenn but I have not heard whether you got the letters or not. We are encamped now / at Cowan Station on the Nashville and Chattanooga Road it seems that the troops under Gen Hooker are to guard railroad instead of going to the front and fighting and the troops which were here are to move forward and reenforce Gen. Rosecrans so after we get settled we will have good times. But we have not fared very well since we came here we have lived on half rations untill within a few days. I never was so hungry in my life as have been since I came out here. We fared / very well on our road here but since rations have not been so plenty. And worse than all I am out of money so that I can not buy any thing but have to rely on Uncle Sam for my rations. Please send me some money when you write Dont send any thing but greenback US money nothing else will pass here most all of the boys are out of money We would all like to see the Paymaster. I guess we got out of the Army of the Potomac in about the right time for I hear that a great battle I expected at any time But we may get into a fight here but there is not much prospect of it. It is raining hard now and my tent leaks so I have wet my paper and I am about out / of paper and ink too. Send the money as soon as convenient for I need it very much if we get settled in this place and trains run regular you can send me a box some of the boys have had boxes come but never mind that now if I can get the money I will be satisfied. I heard yesterday that we are to get a mail regular after today. The reason why I am out of money so soon I wrote in my last. Dont send any more letters to Washington. Direct to Nashville, Tenn. 12th Army Corps and I will get them much sooner. But I cant write more now I will write again soon I got Nelson's letter with yours and will answer it as soon as I have time
[margin]
Write soon and please send the money. Your Aff son Henry
