Honor the Brave
Camp Woodruff
Camp 20th Conn Vols.
Jan. 28th 1864
My Dear Parients,
I answered your last letter dated the 18 as soon as I recieved it and now I will write again. I have been very buisy today. in fact we all have at work on our new stockade. 'Tis rumored there is quite a force of Reb cavalry in the vicinity and if they see fit to give us a call why of course we want to be ready for them. I have been working in the ditch swinging a pick something which I never did at home / but I had rather do that than shovel dirt or help put up the logs. We worked untill noon and then quit for an hour. Then I had to go to my tent and get dinner did not go home and find a nice dinner cooked and on the table. quite the contrary from that. I went to my tent built a fire boiled a kettle of coffee in the pail you sent me (which by the way is very handy) and made a dinner of coffee and hardtack with some cold boiled bacon we had left from breakfast. a very good dinner we called it. And then for supper after working all the afternoon Hen made some cakes of the flour we drew and some meal / we got at an old mill outside of the picket lines That and the coffee in that same old pail and hard-tack made out our supper. For breakfast we will have the same. Sergt Goodrich is a capital cook Handy chap to have around in the family. I began my letter Camp 20th but the boys have since told me tis camp Woodruff in honor of Capt Woodruff who is in command so I put it at the top of the sheet. Capt Woodruff is Capt of Co. E and belongs in Southington a fine old man, a true patriot kind and one of the bravest of the brave. Enclosed I send four photographs of our Generals who have lately / distinguished themselves and I want yours now is the most liesure time you have and get Dwights and Dennys taken at the same time Cousin Dora has promised me hers several times but I have not got it yet. Keep these photographs if you recieve them But I cannot write more at present for the train is coming so good by
Your Aff son
Henry
