Marietta, Ga. July 14th 1864

My Dear Parients,
Yours of the 1st inst I recieved yesterday and was going to answer right-off though I sent you a letter a few days since. When I wrote last we were in "College" since then we have "graduated" and of course the guard (to which I belong) moved with it. We are getting along nicley now as well as I wish. We are now seeing the pleasantest part of a soldiers life. There is not much news from the army to write. The troops are now having a little rest something they need very much. Our pickets are now on this side of the Chattahoochie River (seven miles from Atlanta) and the Reb pickets on the opposite side. Supplies are now coming in rapidly and we are beginning to live better I get along firstrate with what I draw and what money you send me I have not heard from Hen Goodrich for a long time. have never heard from Charlie Abbey but once / since he left us except what you wrote I wrote for a few things in my last, some velvet for stripes and some black thread please send them soon as conveniant for we all want to look as neat as possible and let the citizens see that Uncle Samuel clothes his boys well. There are a plenty of women in town now. There was a large cotton factory about 12 miles from here captured and the operation about 700 women sent in here the city is full of them. I was sorry to hear Denny is sick I hope your next will bring news that he is well as ever. Am glad father has got a machine. whose patent is it? The verses you sent me were splendid I shall keep them. This paper is some that the U.S. Sanitary Commission gave me as I was out of paper But I cannot write more now. Write often as you can and I will answer Send a little change in every letter and when I get paid off I will try and settle up.

Your affectionate son
Henry.
