Jennie (?) to John I. Kendall, 16 August 1864
Handsboro Aug 16th 1864
Dearest Irwin
I am compelled to put you off with a note again but this time from ill health. now do not imagine me dying for the crisis is past. I have been very ill but am now much better though confined to bed since Saturday night I have not been able to turn my self, raise my head or indeed any thing but wag my tongue till today. I sat up about ten minutes yesterday but was brought in a fainting state to bed. three days is a long time for me to be helpless and I am growing perfectly disgusted with a couch. I would not write today but they tell me I will not be able to sit up for several days and I know a continued silence would cause you more uneasiness than knowing the reality. I am now bolstered up in bed & suffering a good deal. I attempted to lift a sick friend Saturday morning & must have strained my back some think I will never get over it others that with great precaution 'twill pass off in a few months but I very much doubt my ever being as strong again. I see from the papers that many of the Handsboro squads were wounded, both La. & Tenn. If you see any of them tell them that the sympathies of H are with them & prayers for their recovery are offered daily. I received no letter in our last mail but confidently expect one tomorrow dearest I must bid you good bye as I'm too / weak to bear the exertion of writing. hoping soon to be able to send you your quota of shirts. Aunt sends love. Sis is not very well but able to be up God bless you dearest good bye
Yours devotedly
Jennie
