Dear Friend,
At the request of Mother I will answer your last letter to her hoping you will accept the substitute though not as well represented to your fancy as I ought to be I will endeavor to do my best at any rate. I have been up here over [faded] months and did expect to go back to old Mobile but now alas I know not when that will be for Ma has left there with great loss and now wont return until this cruel war is over if that will / ever be. I am truly sorry to learn of Lieut Jeter's death and think it very inconsiderate of you not to let us know about it before and I dont see what made you not do it I suppose you judge all like yourself that is to [large section faded] heard of Anola's visit to Mobile and hope she enjoyed her stay [section faded] she should have enjoyed [remainder of page faded] / tioned in or near Mobile. he is Capt now. You was so glad to have the lease excuse for not writing to me that you jumped at Mothers forbidding me not to write to you or that you should not write to me as a drowning man does at a straw. I am certain that you know me better than to be afraid of any of Mothers laws or any one elses that I generally do as I please. I have a great number of male correspondents but I am always glad to hear from those who feel disposed to write to me but if they dont feel so disposed to do so, I dont care a [?] please send me my photograph Lt Jeter had and you will oblige me. I suppose you know from Ma's letter that I have been unfortunate enough to loose my intended in / the Va. army after becoming or being engaged to him for the last three years to loose him he had been in 22 battles and skirmishes around Richmond he was a Capt and only 21 years old a nobler fellow and truer patriot never existed than him I have wrote his obituary and all seems pleased with it except my self and thats because I don't think my pen or any one elses can do him the justice that is due to him. [?] that I told you please [?] but I [?] & wish his name to be spoken of only those who know how to appreciate him. we have [?] home now to ask you to but if you get wounded come to Greensboro and stay at Mrs. A. Johnson's house till you get /
