Stephen B. Tarlton to Arianna E. Tarlton, 10 April 1863
Suffolk Va      April 10th 1863

Dear Ari
I have got to write in a hurry. I have received 3 letters from you and answard but on of them. I wrote a week ago last Sunday and you say you have not received it, so I thought I would write a few lines to day. I am well as usual. the weather is pleasant but cold. the ground is coverd with a heavy frost every morning. we have had our Monthly Muster this morning three companys of our Regt have gorn off some where 5 or 6 miles to a fort I dont know whear Cos A. G. and H have gorn and there is a chance for us to go to Suffolk to do Provo gard duty. if we dont go there I think we shall be split up and put into / some fort around here, so I hope that the Little River folks wont shit them selves by runing to you about me not coming home for if we get a chance to do Provo Gard we wont have to fight. I would not mind any thing thay say but mind what I tell you and you will do well enough if you could see how we get along you would be contented to have me stay if it was not for your fretting your self so. I could say that I never liked any thing better in my life. I get along first rate with the boys in all of the Cos I have been bothered a while for our Chaplin has just been to see me he has been home on a furlough and come back last night. Oh I liked to forgot, we got paid of last Monday for 4 months / so you must look out for your mony from Concord you will get 40 dollars, so I must go up to the city and get my picture I supose

I cant get my picture this time for I cant get away but will try and get it tomorrow. Sence we were paid of the boys that did not alott their mony put it in letters to send home but the mail was robbed and the fellow one of Col Duttons ordleys was caught he belonged to the N. J. 25th in our Brigade. thay found 7 or 800 dollars about him he robbed it here before it started thay found the letters in the woods a little ways from the camp. I have had to run again to the gard house to tie one of our boys up to a post for disobaying orders of an non commissoned officer. he had a / board put on his back with the woards (I disobayed orders) I shant tell you the man name nor the officers. how is Elmer tell him if he disobays you that you will tie him up to a post with a board tied on his back with the same words on it, but you must Court Martial him first.

well I must close for the boys are running in and out of the tent. dont worry any more about me for I am doeing well. Moter says she shant and I dont want you to. it is just what I want for any body not to worry about me

Give my love to Father and Mother & all of the rest

Oh I will answer your questions the next time when I have more time

good day from
Corporal S. B. Tarlton
