January 18th /64
 
Dear Ari:
                        It rains here to day like time, but it is as warm as summer, good weather for young darkeys
 
Oh Ari that thing that I was going to send you is not forth coming so you neednt look for it at presant, but never mind it will come some time, and that shall be just as soon as I can get it. we cant always tell when we can do some things that we would like to do, but you can let me know when you go home from Boston and go when you please. My Sergt is on picket so I shall have to wait untill he comes in before I can tell him that you have seen the Eliphant. 
 
Ari we have not been paid of for all most five months and the boys in the Regt are right smart poor I reckon a southern phraze)
 
I wish thay would pay us off and then I could send you some mony to spend while you are in Boston. Major Grantman is in command of the Regt, and he has demanded our pay so I guess we shall get it before long.
 
How is Elmer and all the rest of the little ons, haveing a big time I suppose at play to gether. I would like to step in and see them about this time. what would you think to see me come in all of a sudden, hay. You look out for I may come when you dont think of it, and then you would be mad I reckon. Give my regards to all inquireing friends,
