Dear Ari:
I will try and write you a few lines. I dont know how I shall make it for the boys are kicking up the very D—l over the good news. we just had an ordleys call and the Major told us to tell the boys that Gen. Sheridan has sent in eight thousand 8000 prisoners that is official, to Gen Grant, so I went back and told the Co. and such a noise you never heard. I dont believe, they threw up fire brands and it is a continual cheer now from the James to the Appomattox Rivers. I dont know what the Johnnys think is up. thay are like a dog with his tail between his legs. Ari! you tell those fellows that think Gen Grant / ant doing any-thing are missinformed or else thay are D—med fools if it is Father Smith. dont you remember that I told you that Grant would bag the rascals and I still believe he will yet. if thay dont all skedaddle there were six rebs come into our lines this morning. thay say that the little Confederacy is about played out. Gen. Sheridan is doing a big thing ant he Ari. I was on picket Saturday when all of our big guns fired one of Grants shotted salutes in honner of Sheridans victories. I tell you Ari I hugged the ground mighty close, for thay threw shells right over us, some of them were so large that I thought thay were Blacksmith shops comming through the air, it frightened the Johnnys most to death. thay only threw over about a dozen shells to us out of one gun.
