Dear Ari,
How do you do dear, I am well and hope this will find you the same. I received yours of the 10th inst in due time and will try to answer it. I have not got one bit of news to write this time. every-thing is as quiet as a pitch fork. the weather is rainy and the mud oh my how deep it is. it is auful bad getting around. we dont get much to eat now, it is such bad traveling that thay cant get the rations up from the landing as fast as we can eat it. "say" Ari I am writeing this Army stile, can you read it, hay / I am writing double quick "March". say, Ari, do you hear any-thing about our Regt coming home to Election. I hear that it is left to our Gen. I mean Major Gen. Ord. if that is so I think we stand a pretty good chance of going home, "how is that."

"Say you," my tobacco has not come yet, and I guess it wont come now. it has been so long on the road. Oh! by the way tell Atwell that we are shooting the subs off at a great rate out here. since I wrote you last thay shot one that belonged to the 12th N.H. and to day thay shot one from the 10th N.H. well all that I can say for them is that thay must do their duty then thay wont get shot "how is that."

The peace Commissioners did not amount to much did thay Ari. well it amounted to as much as I thought it would when thay come through our lines. if thay come again I would kick their A—s if I were Abe Lincoln, "how is that."

"say" tell Elmer that Papa loves him if he is not there to tell him so. I should like to be there and have a good supper with him to night. I think that I could do justice to a good supper to night. tell him to eat a good lot for me. only 7 months from yesterday then my term of service will expire. then Johnny will come marching home. that will soon pass away wont it Ari. but I kinder think that we shall get home to Election if we dont have a fight before then / but dont tell any-body now mind.

Oh! I wrote to Bezaleel to day. I have nothing to write about so I will close, keep your nose clean and shoes tied up.

my regards to all the folks and write very often for I am looking for a letter and some tobacco every day.

Good night,
From your affectionate
Husband in the Army of the James.
Sergt S. B. Tarlton.
