Stephen B. Tarlton to Arianna E. Tarlton, 8 June 1865
Gregorys Corner
Chesterfield County Va
June 8th 1865.
Dear Ari
I received yours of the 30th Tuesday but I dont know as it is of any use for me to write to you for I have not any news to write. besides we expect to be off for New Hampshire our-selves every day and what would be the use of writeing and telling all the news before I get there. if I do I shant have any to tell when I do get home. Every-body says that we are to start for home next Tuesday.
All of our recrutes are to be put into the 2nd N.H. Regt and so are those of the 10th and 12th N.H. then all of the old soldiers of the 10th & 12th & 13th Regt are to take a transport steamer together for Boston / Wont we have a big time going home "hay", with three Regts on one steamer. but all three of them wont make a whole one. then our Brigade Quarter Master says that we shall have one of the best ocean going steamers that there is in the service to take us to Boston. I wish we were there. I dread the job. You say that Mr Clough said that we should be at home last week. you can tell Mr Clough that I know as well about when we shall come home as he dose and I am shure I dont know when we shall get home. what I have told you about coming home is all guess work. you complained because I dont tell you all about it. how in time can I tell you when I dont know any better then you do your-self. / I will tell you Ari when I find out certain but that wont be untill I get home my-self for a soldier aint supposed to know any-thing.
Dont you worry Ari for I shall be at home as soon as the other girls Husbands I reckon. When George James gets home you let me know it will you but dont tell his wife of it. oh Ari I like to have forget to tell you that I have got a plenty of ink. All the news I have is that I am well and live well and do nothing. have aplenty of cherries. I went out this morning and picked one peck in a short time. nice.
Elder Gregory has gone to Richmond to day and left me to take care of his daughter Bettie / the reason I have wrote this so coarse is because I stuck a stub of a limb into my eye the other day so you see that I cant see quite so well to day. but I (eye) shall be all right in a day or two.
now for the finishing tuch. Give my love to Elmer and tell him that Papa will come home as soon as Uncle Sam will lett him. my regards to all the folks and write when you get time Good day. From your Husband in the Army of the James
