William L. Savage to Selah Savage and Sarah M. Savage, 3 August 1863
Morris Island S.C.
Sunday evening Aug. 3rd /63
Dear Parents,
I inclose this with my warrant as Sergeant of Co. I. I have no use for it here. When I get home I intend to have it framed and hung up for my comfort, if no one else can see any, and to remind me of days past. If ever my life should be spared to see that day which I hope is not far distant. I believe every thing is progressing finely here now / The rebels are working as hard as they can we can see them every day nearly. They seem to be putting up new earthworks, and repairing old ones all around Charleston mounting guns and apparently doing every thing they can for the defence of the city. At the same time they keep firing away at our parties who keep busy day and night laying the seige guns that we expect will cause Fort Sumter to tremble to her very foundations and fort Wagner & Craig or Battery B or the Cummings point batteries to come to terms. I am not of course able to say when the General will open the seige. But, when he does I think some one in / the direction of Fort Sumter and the Charleston batteries will open their eyes pretty wide if not wider, for what they will see hear and feel will astonish them more than what they saw on the northern extremity of Folly Is. There is firing every day more or less, but we fire from none of the new guns and mortars mounted, on from those put up at first. We have got some reinforcements coming here, so it is reported, and I guess it is so, for there are several steamers in the harbor to night which look as though they had troops on board. I am feeling better than when I wrote you before. But I was quite sick all day friday.
Your aff Son William /
Mr. Selah Savage
