Edmund P. French to William (?), 28 August 1862
At Home Aug. 28th 1862

Friend William
As I am at home on a furlough doing nothing I will attempt to write you a short letter. I have been off on a furlough since last Friday. I am going back next Saturday to Concord. I am taking lessons on the Fife now in Manchester. I came home today I am going back tomorrow at Manchester. the Captain told me the Regiment was going to leave the State next Thursday. I dont believe it will for a fortnight to come. / I hope not any way. I want to go visiting before I go south I want to come down to Westford and see the folks &c. &c. have you been up to Bedford yet visiting? if not come up next week and come up to Concord and see the soldiers. there is two Regiments there 11th & 13th. the 10th is in Manchester. it is called the "Irish Regiment" most all Paddys. I wouldnt go in it no way. they are all the time fighting getting drunk &c. &c. Well Billy what are you doing in our days. Farming I presume. I have got all through farming for this year. I am going to try something / little different. "Blowing Fife for a living." "Good business aint it"? I rather do that than Blow out Rebel's brains. I saw Wailand Balch yesterday went up to Concord to go in camp. he is in the same Regiment I am in. there is much as 25 in our Company that I know we most all sleep in the same tent. we have tiptop times. Well Billy I cant think of any thing to write. I shall have to wait untill I go South then perhaps I can think something worth writing. this letter will / be rather short. Sour (not sweet) I have written in a hurry as you can plainly see for yourself.

Please write soon write all the news. Excuse all mistakes. Good Bye

Love to all the folks.

Tell Georgia I would like some of her Steam Poetry.
