Edmund P. French to William (?), 22 April 1865
Head Quarters 11th Regt. N.H.V.
City Point Virginia. April 22nd 1865.

Dear Friend Willie.
I received your very kind welcome letter a short time since. I was truely glad to hear from old Westford once more. It seems you are all well. my health is firstrate for an old jentleman like me. well the Bloody 11th is at City Point. we come here last Sunday. we have been doing guard duty on the cars from here to Burksville Junction. I presume you have seen in the papers before this that the 9th Corps was going to Washington. the 1st Div. is on transports now. they got along yesterday. the 2nd Div. is expected today. / we expect to leave by tomorrow. the 3rd Div. of this corps has been transferred to the 2nd Corps. Some pretend to say we are going to be discharged. I dont see it myself. I wish it might be so. I should realy like to see my Marm. There is a better time coming. only 4 months longer any way. that will soon pass away. Well Willie we have seen some pretty hard fighting since I last wrote you but the Regt. has been fortunate enough to get out of it. we didnt loose a man. the rest of the Brigade was engaged. Some of the Regiments suffered greatly. the 9th Corps did not go any further than Burksville I saw great many of Lees Army. they were paroled part of them come down past us. I have seen enough of them to last me.

I went all over City Point to find Emory Wright & Richardson. I couldnt find anything of them. I think they must have left. did they come out with any Regt? if so they are probably on the boat yet. most of the Sutlers are on boats. I should realy like to see them. you asked me if Allen was going to stop at home this summer. no he is not. he is driving a two horse team for Kempton. he has been for a long time. he has let himself for a year. he has got a splendid team. you know this Kempton do you not? lives in Nashua. makes confectionary. Al goes through Worcester quite a number of places in Mass. I told him to go through Westford. he said he would when it was good settled going. / perhaps he can sell some of his candy to Nellie as she tends store. how is she now. my respects to her. well have you commenced planting yet. I presume you have got your early peas & onions planted & Father said he had his some time ago. well Will I think I have written enough for this time. I am still cooking and I must stop writing for it is most dinner time. please excuse mistakes poor penmanship I have written a a hurry you can see. please give my love to all the folks with a share yourself. I should be pleased to hear from you soon again.
