Albert G. Bates to Edith A. Bates, 14 June 1861
Greencastle Penn
June 14 1861
My Dearly beloved Wife
I received both of yours of the 8th and was very glad to hear from you. I assure you I expected to leave this place before this, for H. Ferry. We shall start early to morrow morning and will be I think in about four days march arrive there. I think from what I can hear that there will be a tough battle but we have a tough crowd and courage enough to back us. We are to be under the command of a fine General and one of discretion who has distinguished himself in heroics and I cannot entertain the idea that we have a man that will flinch. We have the interests of our country at heart, and the love I bear for my wife and child, and the family will at all times prompt me to the faithful discharge of my duty. I will stick to my post as long as life and strength will permit and God grant that I be once more permitted to join the loved ones at home. Give me your prayers and I shall often look at your image and know that your heart is with me. I have but a short time to write and have written more to Lewis than I intended but dont think that I will slight you I have give no news excepting this Gov Sprague unexpectedly arrived here last night we turned out and received him rousing cheers / I had an idea that he would not be with us in our first engagement but I have been happily disappointed Bushee has not yet arrived so I think I shall not receive the articles sent, however receive my heartfelt thanks. I have left some of my things at Washington directed to Providence and in all probability will be sent home soon if we return to Prov. Tell Prebe that I am sorry that I have not written to him. tell him I will positively as soon as I can and not to feel slighted for when I have written I have thought of him, and as much of him as of the rest and always will remember him. I love him, I love all. Give him good advice, for me. Tell him all this and that I may have a chance yet to write him. I must close as I have just time to get it to the mail bag.
With the Love to all, and the friends, I subscribe myself as I will always prove your Loving, Loving husband
Albert
