Albert G. Bates to Reuben H. N. Bates and Amy Bates, 15 January 1863
In Camp near Fort Richardson
Jan 15 1863.                Va

Respected Parents,
You will see our position is now changed we have been expecting it for some days past. The first intimation we had of a change was on last Sunday. But our move was not commenced until Tuesday when we had orders to pack everything not needed on a march. On Wednesday morning we struck tents and at 10 oclock we started with a baggage train of 50 wagons for the convalescent camp in the vicinity of Alexandria or much nearer Fairfax Seminary. We are to do guard duty for this camp. the camp is quite large and situated in a very pleasant spot, Fort Richardson just above us on the heights, Fort Albany and Scott in sight. we are on the hill under Fort Richardson, have a very pleasant location, though it seems to me not so healthy as on Minors Hill. We have not commenced our duties yet as we have our camp to arrange. we are quartered in Sibly tents and are now grading the streets. It is the best country I have seen. I have not yet looked around the Convalescent Camp yet but if it is pleasant to morrow I shall go over. we are an eighth of a mile from it / I will then give you a description of it.

By the way did you send the box you spoke of In your last letter you said you should send it on Tuesday or Wednesday last week but I have not yet received it or heard from you. How is Walter you wrote me he was very sick is he better? I have no more time to write now but will tomorrow and give you a description of the country and the Convalescent Camp.

With Love to all.

I remain your
affectionate Son
Albert
