Albert G. Bates to Reuben H. N. Bates and Amy Bates, 4 March 1863
Camp Metcalf Va
March 4th 1863.
Respected Parents,
Having finished some rings and having a good opportunity of sending them I thought I would write a few lines beside. The bearer is Orrin Stanton a member of Co E. He used to drive team for Thomas Eddy. I had not quite time enough to finish the rings as I would like and the bone is not as good as I wished. they are made from beef bone before they are boiled. You must be careful and keep them out of the water. it turns them yellow. The coloring is sealing wax put in hot. I have all I can do in lettering rings for the boys. they are made with an engraving tool. I will send a curiosity also. It is a humble bees nest in a limb of a pine tree. You must be careful in opening it / for if they get warm they will make some attempts to get away. I have found quite a number of them but none so large as this.
There is a man from my Co at home with Stanton his name is James Kelly. he will call and see you before he returns. If you have any word to send he will take it. How is your health? and how is work with you. Who have you to work with you now. I have no more time to write any more.
Give my love to all and accept the love of your Son
Albert.
Stanton will call and see you
before he returns
