Albert G. Bates to Reuben H. N. Bates and Amy Bates, 7 April 1863
Camp Metcalf Va
April 7th 1863.

Respected Parents.
I was quite surprised last night to see Mr Ayer come into camp without you. I am very sorry indeed that you could not come, and that you are sick, for I know you would enjoy yourself so much out here it is getting near pleasant weather and you could roam round and see a great many things of interest. How is your health now are you getting better? Your arm must pain you severely. We have quite a number complaining of colds and rheumatism now. the weather for the past month has been bad. I can write but a few lines more as I have to attend to the signing of the Pay Rolls by the men. We expect to get our money tomorrow. I am alone with the Co now as Capt Parkhurst is away in Alexandria on Court Martial and the first Lieut is detatched as aid to General Slough. I have not had a great deal to do at present but expect to soon. I received the package and letter. tell Susie the cake was first rate. She must write often. Hoping that you will soon restored to good health. I close and remain
your affectionate Son
Albert

Love to all the Family

Regards to Brown and all inquiring friends. hope to see you here as soon as your health permits.
