My Edie
Here we are again in camp. One week ago last Friday left here on an expedition like. The whole force numbered 8000 Infantry 4 Batteries and a Reg of Cavalry. we marched to the Deserted House 10 miles and camped. Co's C & E were put on picket on the South Quay road on Monday and Tuesday were called in and the whole army moved for Windsor on the railroad here we remained until Friday when we went 4 miles nearer the Blackwater called Antioch Church in the township of Zuni on Monday night Co C & K were on picket with Co F a few Rebs showed themselves but did no harm. their loss was one killed sure how many more I do not know. on Tuesday we had a little brush we fought them until 7 oclock in the eve when the whole army moved back to Windsor where they encamped these two Co's with one from the 26 Michigan did all the skirmishing beside covering the retreat. the Co of the Michigan Reg came near killing their Captain he went out in front to see if he could find any Rebs / and it being just at dark his men could not distinguish him and fired on him wounding him in the arm. not very bad. this was the only wounded one on our side.
We marched back to Windsor remained over night. then down the road about 3 miles remained until Wednesday afternoon when we started for camp. After an absence of 11 days of a very pleasant character we we were quite pleased once more to get into anything that looked like a shelter. The story reported about the 11th R.I. and a New York reg is all false. it was a N. Jersey reg and not ours, and it was not as bad as reported. I can not give you all the particulars of our trip now but will tell you when I get home which will be 4 weeks from yesterday. Wednesday I dated this Wed but it is Thursday. I am well and enjoyed myself much. You ask me if we get paid the last we got was in March I had to use all mine for things I needed. I shall have 4 months due me. I forgot to tell you the object of our moving out and back. it was to protect the workmen in tearing up the Rail Road which we have now done to Suffolk from Blackwater. I can write no more at present and with my love I close hoping you are all well. / regards to Mother and the Boys.
Kisses to both and lots of Love.
