Freeport Camp Sunday May 12th 1861
Dear Brother & Sister
As I promised to write to you as soon as I got to Freeport I will now be as good as my word. you will have to excuse bad writing as I have got rather uncomfortable way to write. I am sitting on the ground with the drum for a table. Well Edwin we have got into regular miliatary life how I will like it I cannot say the one thing certain it is not a very easy one. they are drilling us purty hard 8 hours in twelve I presume we will not stay here longer than 10 days where we will be sent I am unable to say our quarters are very comfortable we are encamped in the fair grounds there is eight of us boys messes together it would do you good to see us cooking I was cook this morning / and I think I got along very well for the first trial just here I was called off to drill now I am through and will try and finish my letter we are going to have preaching this afternoon I dont think I will attend as I want to sleep Now Dear Brother and Sister as I have got several letters to write to day so I will have to bring yours to a close write soon as I will feel lonesome
