George B. Miles to Brother and Sister, 22 July 1861
St Charles Mo Monday Morning July 22
Dear Brother & Sister
My time will only permit me to write a few lines this morning as we expect to leave here after breakfast We broke up our camp at Alton Thursday about three oclock went to the river and when we got there we found but two boats ready to take us so the 17 Reg & the German Reg went on board and started we went to the old prison in Alton and staid 'till the next day we got to this place after about midnight we was all anxious to get off as we were after old Tom Harris but when we got there he was gone. we are now going after old Jackson and his crew and woe to him if we find him as us boys have a long account to settle with him for if it had not been for his cursed traitorous schemes we would not have been brought into this nest of cut throats and robbers what point we go to I can not say as / all communication in regard to our movements is forbidden by our Officers. The health of the boys is good and in good spirits the weather is pleasant and the country splendid. I will write to you soon again when you write direct the same as before as Alton will be our head quarters now I must close as I want to write a little to Father this morning
In Haste from your
Affe Brother George
