George B. Miles to Edwin Miles and Susan E. Miles, 10 November 1861
Salem Sunday Eve Nov 10th

Dear Brother & Sister
I presume it is about time for me to be writing to you, and it would have been done had I been able, but since my return home I have been unable to write. Even now I am so nervous I can scarcely hold my pen tho I will do the best I can I will now try and give you an account of my travels since leaving Rolla. I left the Hospital at that place on Friday the 6th of Oct got to St Louis the next morning when we found we could go no further as they would not give us free passes so I went to the Hospital at St Louis staid there till the next Tuesday when I started for Tipton to join the / Reg and to see if I could get my money. We left St Louis about 8 oclock in the morning expecting to get to Tipton that night but when we got to Jefferson City there was no train going any further west so we had to lay there till the next Friday before we could get a train to take us on to Tipton we got there in the evening and luckly for us in time to get our money so we staid there till Sunday morning when we took the train for St Louis got there about 9 oclock staid there till morning when we took the train for Freeport got there about 4 oclock Tuesday morning took the train for Lanark got there about noon took the hack for Carroll got there in due time and I / assure you again I got there I was ready to go to bed I believe I have told you all now about my trip and if it is as much of a task for you to read it as it was for me to write it you will find it no easy task. My health now is improveing and I think I will be able in a few days to rejoin my Co, and I guess Edwin I will have to draw on Owen for some money to take me back as it used up my wages getting home Now Dear Brother & Sister as it is getting late and I am getting sleepy I will close Remember me to Amanda and the boys tell them I would like to have a letter from them

Aff Brother George
