George B. Miles to Brother and Sister, 9 January 1862
Otterville Thursday Jan 9th 1861

Dear Brother & Sister
Your last letter was received in due time and was as usual welcome. Since I last wrote to you I have been very sick again, so sick I almost despaired of getting well again but I have got better again and hope I will regain my health once more. I hardly know what ailed me I had a very bad cold and it settled in my side my side is very sore yet. We are now haveing very disagreeable weather just such weather as is suitable to give a person the blues and I assure you I have got them to perfection I am almost made to curse the day that I became a soldier to see the way in which the / soldiers are treated, keeping us liveing in tents all winter and laying on the cold ground it is a disgrace to our government if I am not very much mistaken there will be a large share amount of sickness among the troops in the spring. The Small-Pox are breaking out among the troops there has been quite a number of cases. I am very fearfull that we are going to have an awfull time tho they may get it checked. I hope that they may But I guess I have written enough about sickness. I had a letter from Father a few days ago he reported all well he says that Martha was going to start East on the next Monday so I presume she is with you ere this. If she is tell her I will write to Kate & Geo when she gets there so she can here from me now I must close write soon

As Ever your Brother
