Dear Brother & Sister
Your letter of the 19 inst was received to day and as I have nothing to do I concluded I would devote my time in writing to you, as I do not know how soon we may be on the march again. when I wrote to you last week I did not think we would be here to day, but Buels division comeing on Nashville has changed our movements. Nashville is in our hands without a struggle part of Buel's forces went up the Cumberland River and are now encamped some-where between Clarksville & Nashville. I do not think the Rebels will make / another stand in this state I tell you the Secesh are badly scared
I think that we will leave here very soon and I expect when we do go it will be up the Tennessee River into Alabama. I guess they will take the western boys to Columbus yet as it seems as tho they have all the fighting to do. I tell you Edwin our Western boys done some hard fighting here and the number of graves to be seen show how severely they suffered I was out to day getting a flag staff for the flag the ladies gave us before we left Carroll I got one off the ground occupied by the Ills 11th it has three bullet holes in it I wish you could take a walk over the battle field there is scarcely a twig left standing / I counted twenty eight bullets in one tree. to look over the ground occupied by some of our brave troops it seems almost impossible for a person to stand and live one instant during the battle there is not a thing but what is pierced by balls I wish I could send you some little trinkets that I have picked up off the field as I can not take them with me. I just received a letter from Martha informing me of the death of Roxy I was sorry to hear of Nattie and Sallie being sick hope they have recovered ere this. Now Dear Brother & Sister I must close s I want to write home this evening. Write soon
Good Bye as ever your
Brother George
