George B. Miles to Brother and Sister, 18 March 1862
Camp at Pittsburg Landing Tenn
Tuesday March 18th /62

Dear Brother & Sister
Yours of the 1st and of the 6th was received in due time, and as I have a few moments of leisure time I concluded I had better occupy it in writing as it is only once in a while that I have a chance to write. I would have written while on the boat but it was so crowded I had no chance to write we were on the boat just nine days and they were just about as tedious to me as I have spent since being in the service we are encamped about two miles from the river about 18 miles from the Rail-Road that connects Memphis / and Manassas, right in the hot-bed of Secesh. our cavalry has skirmishes with the Rebels almost every day they have taken several prisoners. We are getting them in a purty tight place and they will soon have to either fight or surender I am in hopes our marching will soon be over.

As to L. H's whereabouts I am unable to say it is reported that Buels command or at least part of it is about 50 miles from here Lew was in Nashville about three weeks ago comeing this way and I presume he is not very far from here. I had a letter from Mary yesterday she had just received a letter from Lew he is well / and stands marching very well the health of our Regt is very good my health is better now than it has been since being in the service. We are haveing splendid weather now every thing looks like spring the peach trees are in full bloom they look beautifull. I will try and procure you some relics of from the battle field at Fort D. and will send it to you the first chance I have if not I will bring it myself as purpose paying you a visit as soon as the war is over if I live. But I must close for this time
