George B. Miles to Brother and Sister, 29 March 1862
Camp at Pittsburg Landing
Saturday Evening March 29th /62

Dear Brother & Sister
This is Saturday Evening and I am purty tired. This has been a day of general cleaning and washing and I assure you some of Co K stood in need of it. I have been looking for a letter from you for the past three or four days in answer to the one I wrote soon after getting here. the paper George sent me came to hand for which he will please accept my thanks. I had a letter from Father yesterday he reports all well. Owen's has had a new acquisition to their / Family in the shape of a young daughter It seems that the people of Carroll are certain of getting a Rail-Road this summer. Father says that they are hauling timber for the bridge across the creek at Davenports Quary I am in hopes that they will get the road completed by the time I am ready to go home which I am in hopes will be purty soon as I am getting about tired of soldiering. There was a report came in to camp this evening that Island No 10 was taken and that Beauregard was among the prisoners it has caused considerable excitement in camp but I am afraid the news is too good to be true. It seems that Gen Shields has been dealing purty toughly with the Rebels in Virginia / It appears that they are on the retreat every where and I cant see how they are going to stand the pressure much longer How do you like the way Lincoln proposes to liberate the slaves I think the plan a good one and that it will meet the approbation of a great many of Slave-holders But as it is time for the lights to be put out I must stop writing and retire as red-Tape is law among us poor soldiers. Good Night
