George B. Miles to Edwin Miles and Susan E. Miles, 4 April 1862
Camp Pittsburg Landing
Friday Eve April 4th /62
Dear Brother & Sister
Yours of the 26th was received in due time and was read with pleasure. I was pleased to hear that your family was so near restored to health again
Saturday Morning This far I got with my letter last evening when the order came fall in boys with guns &c we are attacked and I assure you it was not many moments 'till there was 40,000 men under arms waiting orders. at last the word came Forward March. then we began to think we was going to have a fight for certain. we marched out from camp about two miles when we found the enemy had retreated. It appears that it was / a reconoitering party sent out by the Rebels. they attacked Shermans Division as it was the farthest out we lost 10 men killed including two Officers a Major & Lieut in all probability we will have a big fight here in a few days as the Rebels are getting in a tight place. Buels forces is comeing on in the rear of them and their only chance is cut to their way through us to make their escape but I am thinking they will have about as hard a job as they have undertaken lately we have about 75,000 men here 200 pieces of artilery and men that know how to use them the principal part of the troops here are from Ills and I am proud to say they have not flinched so far and I think that they have made up their minds not to be drove this time. But may be I am too confident
The work of converting the Rebels down here that you speak off progresses rather slow as they seem very hard to be convinced of the error of their ways. But I think a few more lessons such as they have had lately will have a salutory effect on them. I received quite a lot of papers from you a few days ago they were old but none the less welcome as papers of all kinds are eagerly sought after by the soldiers. Tell Nattie that I will try and get him something as near the shape of a cannon as I can Now I must stop writing as our guns and accoutrements have to be inspected to day. I will write soon again. Hopeing to hear from you soon
I remain as Ever your Affe
Brother George
