George B. Miles to Brother and Sister, 14 April 1862
Camp at Pittsburg Landing
Monday April 14th /62
Dear Brother & Sister
Knowing your anxiety in regard to my fate in this last great conflict I thought I would devote what few moments of spare time I have to day in letting you know that through the mercies of an all mercifull Parent that my life has been spared and I try to feel thankfull to our Heavenly Father that my life has been spared I escaped without a scratch excepting a very slight wound / on the finger made I suppose by a buck-shot I also had my shoulder strap cut almost in two by a ball. I would have written sooner but my time has been so much occupied with other duties that I could not write. I will not attempt to give you any details of the battle as I presume you have had the particulars ere this our Co. (K) lost 7 killed 13 wounded our Capt was wounded and supposed to be a prisoner our 2nd Lieut was killed the Regt lost in killed, wounded and missing 196 the Division (4th) lost between 7 & 800 the greatest of any Division engaged / the 15th I am proud to say stood up to the work nobly but suffered greatly I have met with Lew H since the fight he looks bad he was not in the battle owing to his being sick the Regt was engaged. I suppose our next move will be Corinth as it is reported the Rebels are going to make another stand at that place. But I must close as I am called for some kind of duty Write soon
As Ever Your Aff
