George B. Miles to Edwin Miles, 30 May 1862
New Albany Hospital No 1
Friday May 30th/62
Dear Brother Edwin
I have no doubt but what you will be surprized at receiving a letter from me at this place I have been here two weeks down with the fever again I have been purty low but am getting better now. The intention was to take me to Cincinnatti but could not get through the locks at Louisville so they had to care the sick here. If I had got to Cincinnatti I was going to try to get to Pittsburg but in that was disappointed. Dear Brother I will have to tax your generosity once more I am ashamed to do it but under the circumstances I am compeled to do it I am out of funds and would like to get home if I could Our Regt has not been paid since the first of December that is the reason I am out of money. I have written home twice but can not get an answer I suppose the letters have been miscarried I can get home from here for $10 as I get my fare half price / But I am getting tired sitting up so I must stop writing when you write Direct
