George B. Miles to Brother and Sister, 10 September 1862
Park Barracks Louisville Ky
Wensday Sept 10th 1862
Dear Brother & Sister
Yours of the 8th I received yesterday and as I have nothing to do this afternoon I thot I would answer it, tho I mailed a letter to you yesterday. I was very glad to hear from you, as I hardly thot the first letter I wrote to you after getting here would never reach you as their mail arrangements seemed so imperfect to me. I was examined on Monday and the Doctor pronounced me unfit for duty, he was going to send me to the Hospital again but I would not go as he wanted to send me way out in the country a place likely to be attacked by the Rebels at any time and I assure you I do not want to fall into the hands of professed Rebels as I am treated / bad enough by those professing to be Union men. I sometimes wish that the Rebels would be successfull in their undertakeing the way the Union soldiers is treated. I wish Morgan would come and burn every house in Louisville not a gun would I fire to help save the town placed under the circumstances that I am. O! it makes me so mad to think that they will take the soldiers that are hardly able to be out of their beds to guard Rebels and their property and let them pursue their daily pursuits of life. I have not done any duty since I have been here nor do intend doing any till they let me go to my Regt they have got a lot of Ky Officers here that I believe are half secesh. You ask me if I have got my papers yet I have got all but my old descriptive Role. That I gave up to Dr Bowman so as they could make out our pay / roles in order to get our money and when he sent me away he would not give it to me tho it is here in the Barracks but I cant get it but if they think it will do them any good they can keep it as I have got another one that they dont get into their hands. As to our getting paid now I guess there is not much signs of it for a while. But I have got some money yet and may be I will get my pay before that runs out. They are sending a great many soldiers away from here now their Officers comes after them and I tell you they have to give them up very quick. It is very warm and dry here it seems when I go out in the sun that I would drop. I can not stand the heat at all. My health keeps about the same. I do not see that I improve any I will write a letter to Father soon and send it to you to send to him
They told me yesterday that I would have to stay here 'till my Officers came or sent after me. But they will see different some morning.
But I must close. Remember me to Slagle, Mr Lutton, Mr Smith and all other enquireing friends Write soon as Ever
Your aff Brother George
NB My love to the Children
