George B. Miles to Edwin Miles and Susan E. Miles, 8 January 1863
In Camp at Holly Springs Miss
Thursday Jan 8th 1863
Dear Brother & Sister
Instead of writing to you from Jackson Miss as I had expected to we are again back within 30 miles from were we started. Since I last wrote to you we have been in purty tight papers, but by hard marching and a little fighting we are out again our Rail-Road communication was cut off for about three weeks during that time we could neither get nor send letters, but worse than that our supplies were cut off and we were out of rations all we could get for some days was corn-meal not sifted and that without salt I thot that it would have been a purty good / time for those that were takeing medicine to diet themselves. Our mail came through yesterday I tell you there was a pile of it I received six letters Yours mailed the 14th of Dec was among the lot. We are now encamped in the city of Holly Springs helping to guard a set of Infernal Traitors from southern Ills the 109th Regt they were left here to guard the place the Rebels made a dash on the town and they the cowardly traitors surrendered without fireing a gun and then commenced cheering for Jeff Davis I would like to see every one of them shot some of the Officers have not been heard from since I presume they have joined the Rebel ranks if Ills has any more such men she had better save her $60 a head and leave the men stay at home. / the Rebels destroyed nearly a million dollars worth of property for us besides the buildings they burned as for them we dont care as it has saved us the trouble of burning them when we leave. The balance of the town has got to burn as soon as we get the government stores away. Tell Amanda that her letter will be answered as soon as possible, but not to wait for me to write before she writes again as I have not much time for writing now. But I must stop now and write to some of the folks in Carroll
Write to me soon My love to all
As Ever Your Brother George
