Dear Brother & Sister
I presume you will be surprized at receiving a letter from me way down here as I had no idea when I wrote to you last that we would have to come here. we got marching orders the same day I wrote. I would have written to you again before leaving Memphis but had not the time We are now in sight of the Rebel stronghold and I guess it will not be long before we will be called upon to bear our part as we have orders to move at a moments warning they appear to be fighting purty hard this morning by the canonadeing You will have to excuse me from writing any more as I have other / letters to write that I want to write this morning. May the same guarding power watch over and protect me in the comeing struggle the same as in dangers through which I have passed
As Ever your Brother
George
