May 26th 1863
Dear Brother & Sister
I have a chance to day of sending a letter up the river so I thought I would write you a few lines we have got fairly to work at the city got it entirely surrounded and now it is only a question of time with them when they will surrender we have lost no men as yet in the 15th but we are going to have some hard fighting to do we have about 500 pieces of artillery / playing on the city more or less all the time. Shells are flying in all directions excuse me for not writing more as I have a very poor way of writing we had to leave every thing behind except one blanket not even a change of clothes. after we get settled again and if I am spared I will give you the particulars please let our friends know in Carroll that I am well as this is the only piece of paper that I can get all well
your Brother
George
Direct as before
