Camp of the 15th Regt Ills Vols
In the rear of Vicksburg
Friday June 13th 1863

Dear Brother & Sister
As our mail is going out this evening I thought I would write you a few lines again. There has nothing of importance transpired here since I last wrote you. We are still trying to take Vicksburg but as yet have not succeeded, but we are going to do it some time Ills is well represented here and Ills boys is hard to beat when it comes to fighting. there is some talk of Johnson comeing up in our rear but if he does he will find the warmest place he ever got into

The health of the troop is good weather is very pleasant, not near as warm as we anticipated. We / have good water an abundance of fruit, that of course we have to capture from the Rebs. Our pickets are within a half mile of the Rebel works and they keep them inside of their works. the 15th has been very fortunate so far we have not lost a man yet. the Rebs take a notion to shell our camp some times when we have to hug the ground purty close I tell you, but they do not keep it up long as the gun boats soon stop them. I had a letter from Owen a few days ago they were all well. I just received a letter from Kate & George the first I have had from them for a long time. Word has just come into camp that we had to leave for Black River I do not know how true it is. I will write again the first opportunity I have write soon

As Ever your Brother
George
