Natchez Miss  August 31st 1863

Dear Brother & Sister
Yours of the 8th was received yesterday it was a long time before it got around but it none the less welcome. I have time to write but a few lines as we are ordered off on a scout to be gone ten days we are going up Red River I do not know of any large force of Rebels up there or not I guess it will be another wild goose chase again I will give you the particulars when we get back. I have not been very well for the past few days but I guess I will get to feeling better when we get on the move again. The sickly season is about over also the warmest of the weather and I can say with truth I am glad of it. I would liked to have been with you fishing I think I would have enjoyed myself much better than I did where I was on that day. I have not heard from Carroll for a long time In fact I have about given up getting letters we are getting so far away. But I must stop writing now and get my traveling kit in order. Remember me to all enquireing Friends. Write soon As Ever your Brother George

In eight months more I'll
relieve Uncle Sam from bearing
my traveling expenses
