Dear Brother & Sister
Yours of Sept 9th was received to day. it was a long time on the way it is the first letter I have had from you for about a month. In my last letter to you I told you we was getting ready to go out on a scout. Well we started at the appointed time. we went out to Fort Beauregard on the Washata River about sixty miles from the river, when we got we found the fort in ruins and its garrison gone so that is all our march amounted to Since that time we have been laying in camp takeing our ease I think by the way things look the 15th has seen about all the hard soldiering it will see and I for one am not sorry We have got a splendid officer commanding the 4th Division now, Genl M. M. Crocker of Iowa. The weather now is beautifull / No signs of frost for a month to come. Edwin I would like to meet you in Carroll this fall to go hunting. But I must wait a while longer. by the way I was out hunting this had poor luck only shot one owl. I had an offer a few days ago to go into a Negro Regt as Adjutant. I have not fully made up mind what I will do. the offer is a tempting one. If I could get a furlough now for sixty days I think I would accept the offer. What would you do in my case? Next Sunday is our regular yearly review and inspection and if you want to see style just come down I wish it was over such things is fun for the Officers but death to the privates I almost forgot to tell you, I killed a live alligator while I was over in Louisia. Wasn't that an exploit. I am sorry those two letters was miscarried. the mails are very uncertain. But my sheet (or rather half sheet) is full so I must close

My love to all enquireing Friends reserving a large share for yourselves Write soon
