George B. Miles to Edwin Miles and Susan E. Miles, 24 January 1864
Office Local Special Agent, Treasury Department,
Natchez, Miss. , Jan 24 1864.
Dear Brother & Sister
I do not know wether I am in debt to you for a letter or not but as I am at leisure this morning I thought I would write you a few lines. You will see by the heading of my letter that I still am in Natchez & things look now very favorable for my staying here the balance of the time I am in the service. I was relieved from duty in the Provost M Office & ordered to my Regt for duty. I was very much afraid that I would have to go to carrying a musket again, but thro the influence of my friends I succeeded in getting my new position I have got a very pleasant situation besides it pays much better than / soldiering. I am getting a salary of 90$ pr month together with my rations. I have to write about 14 hours every day our business is to control the trade regulations of this District & it requires a great deal of work I have the promise of retaining my situation after my term of service is expired, but I think I will go home at least for a while but my mind is made up not to stay in Ills a great while as there is too many / chances for makeing money in some of the southern cities that is occupied by our troops. Amanda's letter came to hand in due time and I will answer it soon I have had no word from Carroll for a long time but I presume it is owing to the river being froze up so that we can not get any mail. We are haveing most beautifull weather now warm & pleasant. The health of the troops stationed here is excellent. Give my regards to all enquireing friends
write soon & believe me as ever your
Brother Geo B Miles /
