George B. Miles to Edwin Miles and Susan E. Miles, 29 June 1864
Mount Carroll
June 29th 1864

Dear Brother & Sister
I expect you are giveing me a blessing for not writing to you sooner, if you are not I am not getting what I deserve. So I will not begin to make excuses for I have none to make So will ask your forgiveness & promise to do better in future

I was very much disappointed in not being able to pay you a visit on my trip home, but it was impossible to get mustered out in Natchez. I tell you it is nothing to get in the service but it is a very hard job to get mustered out. We was at Springfield nearly two weeks before we could get our papers right.

my mind is not made up yet wether I will come East this summer or go to my trade. if I go to work I presume my trip will be postponed indefinitely. I find it goes very natural not to be subject to military orders, and I think it will be some time before I am under them again. Some of our citizens of Carroll who do their soldiering at home seems very anxious to have the old soldiers reenlist. I guess some of them are getting afraid of the draft. I find Carroll very little changed and it seems to me to be duller than ever it was. I presume it is owing to my being where there was so much excitement. I have been out on the prairie most of the time since I have been home. been a fishing several times but had very poor success Father does fishing enough for one / family. I cant see that he looks any older than he did when I left home nearly three years ago The weather has been extremely warm since I have been home & the ground is very dry. the wheat crop will be very light, oats nearly an entire failure, corn looks well and promises a large crop. Tell Amanda that she may look for a letter from me soon. The last letter you wrote to me I got a few days ago. it went to Natchez then to the Regt and from there to Carroll. it had quite a round. Martha, Father & all the Family join in sending their Love to you.

My regards to Mr Lutton & Slagle Smith and all enquireing Friends
