George B. Miles to Edwin Miles and Susan E. Miles, 5 December 1864
Mount Carroll
Dec 5th 1864

Dear Brother & Sister
I have put of writing longer than I had intended doing when I wrote you that note about a month ago but as I my time was so much occupied in other matters, you must excuse me for this time

I have been thinking that I ought to write you in regard to the condition of the place (or rather the buildings on it) but then I thought I might be interfearing with business that did not belong to me Father & myself had some conversation this evening in regard to the matter & he thought I had best tell you. The condition of the barn / is in a bad condition & unless there is something done with it it will not be fit to put in stock much less grain the boards on the north side have in a great measure been taken & kicked off & used for purposes I guess no one knows. around the house it looks scandlous cattle has been left run in the yard 'till it is all trampled up. Wood-pile right in the yard &c other things I could mention but perhaps I had best not. I think it is your place to know & also for Shirk to know that you expect him to fix things up before he leaves I would rather Edwin if you would not say anything to Owen in regard to the matter, but write to Shirk If it was mine I would notify him that he was to put things in as good order as he found them & I / would put it in the hands of some one (outside of the Family) to attend to it. there is no doubt but what he intends to let things run 'till he leaves. But I will change the subject. I bought a horse last week & drew on Owen for you for ninety seven (97) dollars I guess I will not buy any more 'till spring I was ploughing last week & would have got through this week if the weather had staid good. In regard to your box of game I will send it as soon as the weather gets cold enough. I guess there wont be much of a variety as game is scarce I will try & get some ducks & chickens. Well I have got myself married & I have been at Ellen to write some but asks to be excused for this time. She sends her love to you & says she will write some in the next letter. I do not know as / I have any thing more to write so will close. Write Soon and as ever

Believe me your Affec
Brother
George
