James M. Woodbury
James M. Woodbury was born around 1819 in Massachusetts to William and Sarah Woodbury. His father worked as a tavern keeper. He married Betsey W. Baker on November 28, 1844, and they had at least seven children: Baxter, born around 1848; Arvilla, born around 1849; Maria, born around 1852; Solon, born around 1854; Antoinette, born around 1857; Homer, born around 1859; and Randall, born around 1863. He worked as a teacher in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, and by 1850, he owned $600 of real estate. A decade later, he owned $2,200 of real estate and $300 of personal property. He began practicing law around 1862.
His name was drawn in the May 1864 draft, but he was ultimately “not accepted.” He supported the Republican Party, and he served as a tax collector in the early 1860s. By 1870, he owned $17,000 of real estate and $4,500 of personal property. He moved to Walton, Kansas, in the 1870s, and he eventually moved to Chicago, Illinois. His health deteriorated in the early 1890s, and he committed suicide in Chicago on March 27, 1893.
