Dear Mother and Father
As we are not with the Regt now I have not had any letters for two weeks. how long before we can go to it I cannot say. I hope soon as we are not doing anything all since the Regt left. Mr Cummings returned to day and I hope to be able to start for home soon. I shall as quick as we get to the Regt and get started again. Our Regt is on the road to Richmond and I hope they will get there. it looks doubtfull now. everything is quiet here. the troops have nearly all left Norfolk and all has left Suffolk. The report has just come that Gen Keys is in Richmond, dont believe it yet as some such report is here every night. It is very warm down here now but I do not mind it much as I have been here since winter. I have not been sick at all. some of the boys has the fever and ague. luckily I have escaped it How is all the folks at home. does Anna like teaching school. I hope she will be able to go through it. does she have a / large school. How is Sarah. last letter I had from Amos wrote that she had another fit I hope she will not have any more. is all the folks in Griswold well the letter I had Emma was there. Business is very dull here no troops the stores are not doing anything and Norfolk is full of sutler waiting to get to the Regt. no sutlers or citizens or goods are allowed there. Capt Clapps wife has gone home. there is several of the officers wives boarding in town I reckon H Richmond is married and all settled down now. is Geo Wheaton doing business there or no. hoping I shall hear from you soon I shall be home in two or three weeks at the farthest
