Charles H. Burdick to Sister, 3 March 1864
New Berne N.C.
March 3rd 1864

Dear Sister
I recvd your letter of the 23d and was right glad to hear from you and that you are all well. I am glad to hear that business is good at home this spring as I was afraid it was not agoing to be much. I like this place here very much a heap better than Norfolk or vicinity I am not doing much since I left Newport News our Regt went to little Washington last Sunday expect them back in a few days and then they get paid off "four months pay". there will be plenty of money here then.

Every thing in the military circles is quiet. they expect the Rebels here soon whether they will make an attack here or not I do not know there will be warm work here if they attack us New Berne is a nice little city all old buildings there is no paved streets / and very sandy.

There is lots of trees here on all all streets there is more or less. I was down to the Gaston House and was talking with the Proprietor Mr. Fisher and found him a brother to Charles W. Fisher the school teacher. he said he had not heard from Charles for a long time and did not know where he was. Mr Fisher seems a nice man and is liked by everyone here. he has a large store besides the hotel There is several gentlemen here from Connecticut doing business in the city.

The boys in the Regt are all well Geo Williams a large sore on his leg what is I do not know he thinks some of agoing home I guess he will if it does not get better soon.

He to that box of glass ware I never thought to write about it. its some I had left after keeping house in Norfolk. I had a lot of freight coming from Balto. / and this box of glass ware with some other things got mixed with them and never finding no owner I kept them, used them and sent them home for your use in the Hotel as they might come handy.

I think Ishould come home this spring if we had staid in Va. but I reckon I shall not now. have been very well all the time so far have had cold but am mearly over it

Ask father if he can find some one that wants to come out here to work this summer as I think I shall want some one. are you a going to stay in the Hotel this next year if not I should like to have father come out here with me. I think he can do as well if not better than at home. I reckon you had a gay time at Richmonds Mill. I should to have been there. I was to a party in New Berne on the 22d had a gay party not much like a northern dance

Geo sends his respects to you and any other enquiring friends

Tell Mother, Father and sister they must not think of my not writing to all oftener for when I write to one I mean it for all.

Give my love to all and hoping to hear from you soon

I remain
Your Brother
