Balto Jan 24th 1865
Dear Mother
Here I am at last in Baltimore. When we can get away I do not know as the ice is has stoped the boat from agoing to fort Monroe.
We had a tedious time ever since we left home we stoped at Norwich after leaving Danielsonville from 12 oclock Tuesday night untill 10 the next day which delayed us one day we arrived in New York about 8 oClock Wednesday eve staid there untill 2 oClock Thursday and then started for Philadelphia. the ice in / in the river delayed us so we did not connect trains at Philadelphia and we had to stay over night there. We stoped at the Continental Hotel at Phil. said to be the largest Hotel in the United States They have there a steam car that takes you up stairs. a very convenient way as it saves a good many steps up the long stairs. Geo Wheaton he has been put to been a good many ways but not by steam before this. Friday noon we started for Baltimore. arrived about 5 oClock no boat left here Saturday for Fort Monroe Sunday one started for the Fort went 15 miles / cutting through the ice all the way we were untill dark going this distance. then after turned around and came back we had a very pleasant time there three ministers on board the steamer. we had prayer and some remarks by other passengers. services held for two hours. To day (Monday) there is no boat starts, no boat has arrived as yet from the Fort. When we go it is uncertain. we may go tomorrow and may not in a week
George says he is a good mind to go back home and take a fresh start There is a gentleman here from Conn that is building a hotel at / at Harpers Ferry and wants me to go with him as soon as it is finished which will be in about two months. whether I go or not or know not. I shall go to the Regt first. Everything here is very quiet. it is raining quite hard to day there is hardly any snow at all here. there has been some sleighing. How is farming—How did you get along with the court after I came away. was there many there. Hoping this may find you all well I remain with love to all
Your aff Son
