My darling Mother
I suppose you will be somewhat surprised to hear that I am here. this is the reason I have not written to you for some time, because I did not know where I should stop. I arrived here last night. So far I cannot tell how I like but I think I shall like it quite well. I left Bothwell about three weeks ago, stoped some time in Chicago. that place I do not like. it is a low filthy and to me disagreeable
I saw Henry Dyer Esq there last week. he did not know at first I suppose because he had no idea of seeing me there. he is coming here shortly and I shall probably see him again. I think I have a nice boarding place. it is a widow lady. she has only six boarders a nice house in quite pleasant.
I don't know what I shall do here yet the city is quite dull. a good number of the people left on account of the cholera which has been quite bad but it is few cases now. /
How have you all been since I last heard from you it seems a long time but it was my fault for not writing to you. I will do better in future. Mr Dyer says Brooklyn is the same old place so I suppose there can be no news how is father and Amos getting along with the Moosup line. do you have many boarders. is the Putnam house open. How is Sarah this summer. before said she was better the last time you write me soon. In my next I will give you a description of St Louis. Hoping this may find you all well, I remain with love to all Your Loving son Charlie
