Charles H. Burdick to Nancy Burdick and Charles C. Burdick, 24 February 1872
San Antonio Tex
Febr'y 24th 1872

My darling Mother and father,
Your kind letter came to hand some few days ago but have been waiting in hopes something might turn fortune in my favor but so far in vain but still I anticipate I have excellent prospects. I like San Antonio the best of any town that I have been in this part of the country. it is a very old town. the houses nearly all built on the Spanish style and the population are about equaly divided between American, German / & Spanish. some negroes but a majority of the poor people are Mexicans. there is some very fine springs here just above the town on the mountain side, so that water runs upon all the principal streets in town. the only trouble we have very little rain. they say here it has not rained for the last six months but still the gardens are watered and we have all kinds of vegetables the year round to day is like summer the thermometer stands 60º d above zero.

I recvd yesterday a letter from Emma in Providence also a letter from Amos in Willimantic enclosing the / draft of $300 for which dear Mother my kindest thanks and love for all at home. I never thought I would be compelled to ask any one for money after having made so much, but living beyond my income and business getting dull soon left me in the rear. but I will go to work with renewed energy and profit by the last sad experience and trust that all will be well again.

The reason I was silent so long was I kept in hopes that I would get to doing something so that I would be stationery and could get some letters from, but kept failing always so I was near discouraged.

I suppose you remember Daw Harris who used to live at Webbs Mill I saw him a short time ago and recognized him although it must be 18 years since I saw him. he wants to know about his people. please write in your next in regards to it and about E. P. Harris. I had a letter from my wife who sends love to all.

Hopeing dear Mother this may find you all well I remain with love to all

Your aff Son
Charlie
