Charles H. Burdick to Anna P. Burdick, 18 January 1875
St Louis Mo
Jan 18—75

My dear Sister.
Your letter came to hand some time since and you must excuse delay in answering the reasons are that I have contemplated making a change here and did think of leaving the city and waiting from day to day thinking I might arrive at some definite results but so far have not and probably may be so for some time.

You wrote of your coming here with some one next spring. I should advise you all to stay where you are as every one in dull times think they must "go West" / when there is not as much money, no more business in proportion to the no. of inhabitants, and living and general expenses a great deal more than in the East. With a small capital I prefer New England to any part of the world as there you can live and enjoy good society while here people only stay and no society unless one has plenty of money.

Ella received a letter from Cousin Mary and one from Emma and Amos. I suppose Amos goes to Providence as he wrote he was agoing to give up farming, which I / think a good idea although I have in the main not been successful in my transactions. it will not do for me to give advice. Ella will answer letter in good time Mary write gives all the general news and [?]

We had a very quiet time of the holidays the most so generally of any in St Louis so far. Jan has been extremely cold, not much snow, but we had a sleet and rain storm which freezing immediately made it very slipery and Ella and me have each received a fall, which as there was spectators did / us, you know how it is.

King Kalakaua is in town arrived last night and is the guest of the city and as a King dont amount to much and as a man less. will send papers so you may see how he is appreciated.

Hoping this letter may find you all well Ella joins me in sending love to father Mother sisters and all

Your aff Brother
Charlie—
