Nathaniel C. McLean to Mary L. McLean, 20 July 1862
Head Quarters 2nd Brig 1st Div
Camp at Sperryville July 20th 1862

This letter will be handed you dear wife by my friend Captain De Beck who commands a battery in my brigade. He has promised to give you an account of all of our doings, so that you can hear of us as we actually are.

Capt De Beck stands at the head of the officers in his branch of the service, and we are sorry to spare him even for the short time he is to be absent. I need only say to you treat him as my personal friend.

Your affectionate husband
N. C. McLean
