Susan R. Crockett (maiden name: Longfellow) was born around 1833 in Bangor, Maine, to George Longfellow. She was raised by Stephen and Rhoda Branch, and by 1850, she was living in Augusta, Maine. She married Rufus Y. Crockett around 1854. Her husband worked as a printer and sign painter, and he served in the Union army from 1861 until 1864. By 1870, the family owned $1,500 of real estate and $300 of personal property. They moved to Bath, Maine, sometime in the 1870s and adopted a daughter named Gertrude Howard. Rufus died in Bath in 1884. She applied for a widow’s pension that November and eventually secured one. She died of Bright’s disease in Bath on August 5, 1897.
