Jason Harrison Barrett
Jason Harrison Barrett was born on August 26, 1834, in New Hampshire to Joseph and Deborah Barrett. His father was a farmer who owned $7,000 of real estate by 1850. He grew up and attended school in Lyman, and by 1850, he was also working as a farmer. The family moved to St. Johnsbury, Vermont, around 1851. He earned a living as a miller, farmer, and carpenter. An early biographer noted that he was “always particularly successful in tilling the soil.”
He married Mary Jane Fellows on November 2, 1864, and their daughter was born around 1879. They lived in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, and by 1870, he owned $2,000 of real estate and $1,200 of personal property. The couple helped care for his elderly father and her elderly mother until at least 1880. His health deteriorated in the early 1910s, and he died of chronic nephritis in Waterbury, Vermont, on February 6, 1913.
