Julius Peter Garesché
Julius Peter Garesché was born on April 26, 1821, near Havana, Cuba. He enrolled at the United States Military Academy in 1837, and he graduated four years later. In July 1841, he received a commission as a 2nd lieutenant in the 4th United States Artillery. Over the next few years, he served at Fortress Monroe, Fort McHenry, and Carlisle Barracks. He was promoted to 1st lieutenant in June 1846, and he served as an acting assistant adjutant general during the Mexican American War.
He married Marie Louise Delaureal on February 19, 1849, and they had at least four children: Margaret, born around 1852; Octavia, born around 1854; Lewis, born around 1856; and Delaureal, born around 1860. He spent most of the early 1850s in Texas, and he was transferred to Washington, D.C., around 1855. By 1860, he owned $7,000 of real estate and $600 of personal property.
He was promoted to major in August 1861 and then to lieutenant colonel in July 1862. He served as General William S. Rosecrans’s chief of staff. He died in the Battle of Stones River on December 31, 1862.
